Planning to do anything for the 9/11 day of National Service in Remembrance of those that lost their lives in 2001?  We were love to hear what you are doing today.  Please comment back or email AmeriCorps@thesca.org to let us know how plan to commemorate this day.

Hi all,

There is a great opportunity for you to join in on a 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance Civic Reflection Discussion.  It will not be hosted by SCA and not required, but this is something that would be really great for you to participate in.

This civic reflection discussion will provide an opportunity for AmeriCorps members and program staff to dialogue about important questions around diversity, peace, responsibility, good deeds, and much more. To get to these questions, we will use a specific reading that you are required to read prior to participation and that will be emailed prior to the day of dialogue.

Here are the dates, times and registration information:

The 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps is 9 days away! AmeriCorps programs all over the country are celebrating together through service events and a simultaneous swearing in ceremony at 11:30am on Friday, September 12th. We would like all SCA AmeriCorps members to have the opportunity to participate in this historic event. We understand that our members are spread all over the country and getting to an event may be impossible for some, but never fear, there are ways that even the most remote members can join in!

Here is a list of ways you can join the celebration and show your support for AmeriCorps:

1. Join a local swearing in ceremony in your state. Find an event on the AmeriCorps page or just contact me and I can put you in touch with the right people.

2. Recite the AmeriCorps Pledge at 11:30am on Friday at the same time as thousands of members all over the country. Watch the live simulcast (led by President Obama!!) on Friday morning (it should start before 11:30, but we haven't received the exact time yet.

3. Take the online pledge to serve.  This takes literally 10 seconds and you get a cool certificate.

4. Show your support using social media! Join the Thunderclap

We would really like to encourage you to join the live simulcast if you are unable to attend an event in person. The September 12 nationwide pledge event will recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of AmeriCorps over the past twenty years and you are part of that history.

Do you have plans for 9/11 and 9/12 yet??  September 11th is a day of national service in remembrance of those who lost their lives on the tragic day in 2001 and September 12th is the celebration ceremony of AmeriCorps' 20th anniversary... so as you can imagine there will be a lot going on!

AmeriCorps is going to be holding events in every state and territory on one or both of those days and would LOVE you to join them.  Please contact me directly at americorps@thesca.org if you would like more information on what is happening in your area.

Your preparation for Life After AmeriCorps is an area we strive to prepare you for in every way possible.  One of the most important areas concerning Life After AmeriCorps is the use of your Segal AmeriCorps Education Award and your pursuit of higher education.  In conjunction with AMERICORPS ALUMS, we are proud to announce the second annual AMERICORPS ALUMS Virtual Grad School Fair Series, an opportunity that will connect you to graduate schools and programs that will include schools that offer special incentives specifically for AmeriCorps members and alumni.  The event is a great opportunity to learn about schools committed to national service, and there will be two events this year.  They will occur on Friday, September 26, 2014 from 12:00PM to 3:00 PM Eastern (Register here) and Tuesday, September 30, 2014 from 6:00PM to 8:30PM Eastern (Register here). Attn: Members serving in and around Seattle!

Greetings AmeriCorps Volunteers –

I would like to invite you to participate in a unique day of volunteering on Saturday, June 7.  As you may know, the Mayors of Seattle and Denver made a friendly Superbowl wager on the Today Show for a day of service with AmeriCorps members from the winning city.  As you definitely know, the Seahawks won and the Denver Mayor, Michael Hancock, is now coming to town to make good on the wager.  We are now looking for volunteers that would like to participate in one (or both) service projects scheduled for that day.  We are also hoping to have the Seahawks participate in both of the events but participation from any players, coaches, or Blitz (the mascot) has not confirmed at this time.

SERVICE PROJECT #1

Time: 8:00am – 11:00am

Location: Century Link Field OR Seattle City Hall (location to be confirmed)

Participate in a resume building and interview preparation event with Seattle youth alongside Mayor Murray of Seattle, Mayor Hancock of Denver, the Director of AmeriCorps, members of Mayor Murray’s Staff, and Seahawks (unconfirmed).  Training will be provided by the United Way of King County from 8am – 9am so you are better prepared to give useful feedback.  Following the training, you will be matched with one of the youth participants, discuss their resume and/or career aspirations, and participate in a one-on-one mock interview (you being the interviewer).

SERVICE PROJECT #2

Time: 11:30am – 4:00pm

Location: Habitat for Humanity work site: 4053 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way South, Seattle

Participate in a building project in the Rainier Vista neighborhood (Southeast Seattle) with Mayor Murray, and Bill Basl – Director of AmeriCorps, Seahawks (unconfirmed), and other AmeriCorps Members.  Volunteers will be painting and doing interior framing on the home.  We will also be celebrating Seattle Works Day at the event.  Lunch and training will be provided by Habitat for Humanity. Please wear clothes (AmeriCorps t-shirt) and footwear appropriate for construction work.

Other Key Information

  • Participation is first come, first served.  Project #1 will cap at 20 participants and Project #2 will cap at 15 participants.
  • If you choose to participate in both service projects, you will need to arrange your own transportation between the 2 locations.
  • We expect that there will be press at both events so PLEASE wear AmeriCorps gear and be prepared to be on camera.
  • More details regarding the location of first service project and other logistics will be sent prior to the event.

Ready to volunteer?  Please RSVP to kfranklin-temple@cns.gov and let me know if you want to participate in Project #1, #2 or both.

Please let me know if you have any other questions related to the event(s) so I can be sure to address them in the final communication.

Hope to see you there!

Kirsten Franklin-Temple
