Hey Beth,

way back in July I contacted you about my experiences in SCA and interest in learning a bit more about your work and the mission/vision of SCA, and think that it would be great to grab a cup of coffee some time.

You mentioned that you live in Somerville and that Cambridge might work? . . . let me know if it might work to grab a cup of coffee somewhere in Harvard Square one morning?

happy beautiful fall days,

Andrew

Hey Beth! Nice to connect with you. Unfortunately, I now live in Washington, DC, so I may not be able to join you at Bowdoin (though I would love to--it's a beautiful place!). I imagine you have contacts there, but if you need an introduction at Career Services or the Outing Club, I would be happy to do that for you. I first got serious about applying for SCA after meeting an SCA recruiter at Bowdoin, so--on behalf of current students like me--thank you for your work!

Best,
Jamey

Sweet, virtual friends now too! Was bullying the wrong word? I reread it and went whoops, maybe not the best choice there...

Don't think she's joking about bullying inviting you to represent SCA at events...believe me, she'll do it. :) (OK, she's a very gentle bully.)

Hi Beth, Nice to make your acquaintance. Yes, I am still at Harvard - I just finished the first year of a  doctoral program at the Harvard graduate School of Education (that is also connected with the Business School and Kennedy School). This summer I'm working with MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education up in Lawrence, which should be really interesting, but alas, it means that I won't be available on Friday July 20th - that event does look super-cool. . . I remember very fondly my time as an SCA volunteer and (while I have been an educator the past 15 years and so haven't had significant income), SCA is one of the few organizations that I make an annual donation to. My brother also did SCA in Alaska as a part of a highschool crew and it was an outstanding and formative experience for him, too. I've spent the past 10 years working as an educator at the secondary level in a network of schools called "Big Picture Learning" and I feel like my work was strongly influenced by my experiences in SCA. If you're interested in getting together and chatting some time about SCA, I'd love to. Not sure what your summer schedule is like, or if your travels ever bring you over to Cambridge or up to Lawrence, but let me know? - Hurrah for SCA (and all "real-world" learning!)

SCA Northeast Recruiting - The Adventure Begins!

Posted on September 13, 2012 at 4:22pm 2 Comments

I will be hitting over 20 colleges in the Northeast over the next few months, spreading the word about SCA through class presentations, info tables, student meetings, faculty meetings, and career fairs.  I will be getting people interested in our amazing programs, connect with alumni and will be available to answer questions about benefits, what it’s really like to participate, and the application process.

I have been a recruiter for over six years and have visited countless schools,…

Boston Outdoor Nation!

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 2:31pm 5 Comments

It was finally my turn! There have been a number of Outdoor Nation summits happening across the country that a number of my co-workers have had the chance to go to (you may have read about some of them in this blog or maybe had the chance to go to one), so my excitement level was pretty high when Boston Outdoor Nation happened this past weekend, July 21-22. It felt like I had been waiting for this day for ages!

We kicked off on Friday with an SCA-led service project on Peddocks…

I love getting people excited for SCA, but I also love visiting members in the field and checking out first hand all the amazing things our members do.

In early June, I had the privilege of visiting five different interns in the field in PA/NJ and learning about their internships. I visited members involved in two of our…

Welcome!

Welcome to the coolest page on here. There is no charge for awesomeness. (Quick, what movie is that from?!)

I've been kicking around these here parts for awhile. I did four seasons as the Midwest Recruiter for SCA and am getting ready to start my third season as the Northeast Recruiter. I have been to literally over 100 schools to talk to people about the amazing program known as SCA, and I'm excited to answer any questions you have about SCA, your application, or what it's like to be…
