NH Parks and Recreation

Serving in NH, with NH State Parks and Recreation as Park Staff. I'm glad to have a seasoned crew to work with at Silver Lake State Park, in Hollis, NH. I'm grateful for the work and the crew that I spend time with. We have gotten so much done so far this season, since May, for the state park, and every morning when I go in to work and raise that American flag and that New Hampshire State flag high up on that flagpole, I am proud to be serving NH State Parks, and making Silver Lake a great,…See More

NH to NY. Counting down one week until I begin representing @the_sca and @americorps as an intern at @FireIslandNPS Thank you!

As I count down my last week sitting at home in NH, as I prepare to travel to NY for a 6 month wildlife mgmt internship with @the_sca and @americorps, I explore the SCA website, reach out to my field contact for a packing list, and dance around my bedroom preparing for a 6 month adventure on @FireIslandNPS. The emotions I have about this internship opportunity are endless, like an endless summer, full of opportunity, exploration, hard work, and activities. I'm so stoked for this move, the work…See More

Had an Interview today for a Wildlife Management Intership Position at FIre Island National Seashore in NY

Today, I had a great conversation with a biologist about an open internship position in NY. I'll continue to research Fire Isand National Seashore because I would really enjoy assisting in the monitoring of endangered shorebirds program. I would also be able to assist biologits and researchers in distance sampling surveys for White Tailed deer. This is such a great opportunity for me! There is a small Wilderness area monitored by the park service, south of Fire Island on Barrier Island, which…See More

Last two weeks of service in The Green Mountain National Forest

SO, this twelve weeks of service has been unbelieveably hard work that engages all of the team members senses. Completing the Wilderness Challenges in each of the 8 Wilderness Areas in the Green Mountain National Forest, has been service-learning, service-doing, and service-educating. Communicating environmental ethics as well as learning about Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics and communicating all this to through-hikers in the GMNF is a challenge, and I found it surprising how many people use…See More

Wilderness Stewardship Challenge

More recently, the team has monitored and inventoried the George D. Aiken Wilderness Area, followed a tornados line of disturbance and waypointed a route through the Aiken wilderness with GPS. The team also traveled to the Lye Brook Wilderness to clean and monitor camp and fire rings, to condense social trails and collect rubbish, and document invasive plants. Work included posting cedar signs to clarify trail intersections, and waypointing boundaries of wilderness that need improved signage.…See More

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

Alright, two full days of Wilderness Medicine instructors quizzing us about wilderness medicine, first aid, rescuce breathing, and cpr. We practiced tehniques for two days, creating litters for carrying out injured people from the backcountry, practiced moving, rolling, stabilizing, and transporting an injured person through the backcountry. The Wildnerness Medicine Instructors made clear to us all the proper sequence, and scope of practice that we are allowed to use in the backcountry. The…See More

Hey Heather! I'm doing well :) Sounds like you're having a lot of fun working for the NH Parks & Rec department. Do you help maintain the parks? I'm actually working for Parks & Rec in Newtown, CT, as a 'ranger' but it's not volunteer work -- it's only a summer job. Basically, I help make the park look nice before people come. Planting trees, mulching, grooming baseball fields... stuff like that. It's also hard work but I like being outside and on my feet.

I'm very excited about the programs that the SCA has to offer! I've applied to four positions... one I really have my eye on, but I was wondering, about how long after you submitted your application did it take before you heard back from anyone?

Anyway, I hope you're doing well! It's nice to have someone like you to connect with and talk to. I miss you! Hope you're doing well :D
