September's Read: A Book About Trout

Here in New England we have about a month and a half left in our standard fresh water fishing season. So, as the fall settles in it got me thinking about where all of these stocked trout come from, and why we always seem to have Rainbow Trout in our waters. Anders Halverson's exploration of that exact topic is a compelling version of the formation of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and packed with aquatic ecology considerations for our friends under the surface. Take some time to read:…See More

August: Street View for the Gulf Coast

Ok, so we live in a world where our impacts on the environment are getting more and more obvious, but sometimes we need a bit of a reminder. This initiative is powered by some of the same technology that gave us street view in Google Maps. The idea is to use updated maps of reefs in the Florida Keys to inform management practices. In the end they are also hoping to impact human behavior by sharing these maps online. What do you think? Here is the article:…See More

July's Article: The Indiana Dune National Lakeshore's Sinkhole Mystery

OK. I am a little late on this one, but this article is so good it is hard to pass up. The "incident" happened back in April as well as the formal discovery of sinkholes in sand dunes. Sinkholes in sand definitely peaked my interest. How? What? Why?! Here is an…See More

June's Article: "How to Farm a Better Fish" by Joel K. Bourne, Jr.

Fish farming or aquaculture has been a practice among humans for almost as long as humans have been growing food on land. The earliest recovered evidence of this practice dates back to 6000 BC. The rise of industrial fish farms though is something a bit more recent. As global food shortages capture more news time our global society is increasing looking to our oceans to feed an ever growing society. This…See More

May's Article: "After Stanford Divests From Coal, Activists' Hopes Turn To Harvard"

There are a growing number of colleges and universities who have started to divest (selling stocks and bonds and re-investing them elsewhere) their endowments from fossil fuels. National Public Radio reported a story from one of the many students who have be pushing Harvard University to do same. Listen Here While divesting is one way to illustrate how an…See More

We like to keep in touch with our alumni, and encourage them to continue serving with SCA through high school, college, grad school, and beyond. After they've moved on in their careers, often to jobs with an emphasis on…See More

Posted on May 22, 2014 at 11:10am 0 Comments

Before you have your mid season check-in with your supervisor take some time to read over your plan to see the progress you have made on your goals. If you have not set goals yet, take some time to fill out the planning form with the things you have been doing, or take the time to revise some you have been working towards prior to the check in so you can gather feedback about the revised goals.
