Passing the Torch

Four years ago, I was completing a six-month hitch as a Student Conservation Association intern in the Forest Service's Alaska Regional Office in Juneau. Today, I'm the partnership coordinator for the Tongass National Forest in Ketchikan, Alaska - and I have the honor of hiring SCA interns to come work for me in the nation's largest national forest.

I'm proud to be able to call myself a success story that illustrates the lasting value of our agency's partnership with the SCA, and I believe it's my responsibility to help the next generation of conservation leaders turn internships into careers.

Hi Travis,

Great info on career path. Regarding non-competitive hiring, is there a certain category on "Who Can Apply" that I need to look for on USA Jobs? Or do I only apply for "U.S. Citizens"? I just finished my 2nd internship with SCA, including one in Alaska. I have also worked 2 seasons for NPS before my internships. I had to turn down a Forest Service position at the Mendenhall Glacier last winter because I had just started my internship at Glacier Bay. I love Alaska! Sometimes my dream of a career in the NPS or Forest Service seems so unobtainable. But this dreamer isn't giving up! Congrats on all that you've accomplished.

My experience as an SCA intern ended four years ago, but that six-month hitch with the Forest Service's Alaska Regional Office in Juneau only began my career in conservation. I turned my outstanding SCA experience into a new mission in life, a partially-funded master's degree, and a career position with the Forest Service.  Today, I'm hiring SCA interns in my job as partnership coordinator for the Tongass National Forest in Ketchikan — providing oversight and support for volunteer,…
