Well, I meant to do this weekly, but with spotty internet and finishing a project for a previous employer, I just didn't, okay? I'll give a short summary of my second two weeks here at Homestead.

Week 2: My roommate and other SCA intern arrived and I met my boss for the first time. We got trained together, mostly things I had already been trained on, partly things I needed to be trained on for my specific projects. We got to learn to do water quality testing on the creek and the pond on the site, as well as use some power tools keeping the garden and native plant display looking nice.

Week 3: The Iowa Conservation Corps were here for the week spraying dogwood and sumac in the prairie, and we finally got a chance to help them at the end of the week. It was great to be out in the prairie, feeling how big 160 acres actually is, and doing hands on resource management. We were sad to see them go.

Then in week 4, we shut down. Tuesday will mark week 2 of the shutdown. The first few days were sort of fun - a coworker and I went camping at a nearby state park and waded in the Missouri River, I finally got the chance to go to the farmers market, and there was a "furlough party" for most of the staff to get together and try to enjoy the prospect of being out of work. I decided to visit some family that I don't get to see much for a few days, and now I'm back, just waiting, waiting, waiting.

I should be using this time more wisely to read my books - some about prairie restoration, some novels written about the area by local authors, and I want to learn about GIS since that's one of the big things I wanted to get introduced to here.

I'm getting a little worried about the shutdown, but that's not gonna get me anywhere. I came here to have a great experience, and I'll do that whether or not we ever get to go back to work.

Homestead is the greatest and of course Jesse and everyone else too! I hope you enjoy your time there like I did!
